Always call in to reserve before you go as this place is always packed even on weekdays. We missed the first session which is from 11.30am to 12.45pm but managed to booked the second session starting at 1pm.

Felt grateful that we got the window seat finally for the first time!

Tho Yuen Restaurant (桃園茶樓)

Tho Yuen Restaurant (桃園茶) is one of the surviving old restaurants that have been operating in Penang for over 80 years! Restaurants and shops like this is diminishing day by day following rapid urbanization and expansion of the city. Fortunately with George Town being enlisted by UNESCO as world heritage site, many traditional shops like this now have gleam of hope to survive in an intense competitive environment today.

One thing that ensures Tho Yuen’s success is undoubtedly the food they serve. To run a restaurant successfully in Penang is no mean feat as Penangites are spoilt for choices when it comes to food. There are just foods everywhere day and night! Tho Yuen Restaurant (桃園茶) specializes in Dim Sum and Cantonese cuisine and they have extensive menu for you to choose from. However, I’m going to share a few dishes that I will order whenever I visit this place.

Fish Ball Soup
Fried Crispy Noodle 炒生麵 with seafood, pork and chicken
Fried Hor Fun and Rice Vermicelli or 番薯: its nickname

Besides delicious Dim Sum and the dishes that I shared above, Tho Yuen Restaurant also serves good Hainanese Chicken Rise. The roast chicken thigh and drumstick is my personal favourite.

Dim Sum @ Victoria Park

As mentioned in the previous post, Victoria Park has many Asian restaurants dotted along the busy Albany Highway due to its proximity to both Perth city center and Curtin University. And it offers an alternative place for people craving for Dim Sum without having to caught up in traffic jam and struggling to find a parking spot in the overcrowded Northbridge or Chinatown.

You can have equally delicious Dim Sum in Emma's Seafood & Dim Sum Restaurant at Victoria Park. The ambiance of the restaurant’s interior is a fusion of East meets West. This place is popular for their lunch or dinner dim sum. As with all other Dim Sum restaurants, waitresses will push their carts around and you just pick whichever dishes that look appealing to you.

Among the delicious Dim Sum includes: scallop dumpling, egg tart, bbq pork buns, rice flour rolls and deep fried squid tentacles.

Address: 886, Albany Highway, Victoria Park, WA, 6100, Australia.

Imperial Court Dim Sum

Parking is always a major hassle if you plan to go to Northbridge (Chinatown) to have Dim Sum (点心) as there is simply too much traffic and not enough car parks. You may end up parking your vehicle far away and having to walk quite a distance before you could sit down, relax and have a nice morning tea with your family.

Fortunately there is a place outside Chinatown but still close to the city where you can find good Dim Sum. Imperial Court is located at Como next to South Perth alongside the Kwinana Freeway. The address is 125 Melville Parade, Como and there is plenty of free parking space along this street. It faces the majestic Swan River and by the look of this magnificent view will sure opens up your appetite.

This place open at 11am but people would start queuing for a seat as early as 10.30am! Yes, this is how popular this restaurant is. One important thing to keep in mind is that if you are meeting someone, make sure that they are there on time and queue up together with you because if they are not there you will end up waiting in front of the reception counter and won't get a seat even if you were the first one in the queue.

This restaurant's special: Brown Rice Flour Roll
Xiaolongbao (小笼包) / Steamed Bun
Century Egg Porridge. It comes in middle size bowl enough for two.
Chicken Feet
Egg Tart (蛋挞) is quite nice but a bit sweet for me. It could be just me as other people seems to like it a lot.
Deep Fried Prawn Dumpling (炸虾饺) is very good because it is less oily, the prawns are fresh and the dumpling skin is not too thick but very crispy.
烧卖,this classic dish is juicy and fresh.
Steamed Prawn Dumpling (虾饺), the skin is so smooth it feels good in your mouth.
The long queue before the restaurant open for business.

 Opens everyday except Tuesday.

Sungai Pinang Food Court

Right at the intersection of Tun Dr. Lim Chong Eu Expressway (formerly known as Jelutong Expressway) is the Sungai Pinang Food Court. You can find many Penang delicacies here like all the major local noodles dishes, dim sum, fried oyster, chicken herbal soup and last but not least my personal favourite Ikan Bakar (grilled fish)! The Ikan Bakar stall is right at the main entrance and is named East Coast BBQ; sounds a bit confusing especially when you are in West Coast of Malaysia.

The seafoods at the stall are very fresh from the catch by local fishermen, this is the advantage of living on an island surrounded by sea! It is always fortunate to be able to live in Penang because there is always no shortage of seafood all year round! Last time I always thought that seafood could be found anywhere in the world until I visited China. I went to Shanghai and Suzhou and realized that the menu only have fresh water fish and not fish from the sea. I prefer fish from the sea as they have sweeter taste and less bones. After that trip I started to be more grateful and contented that I am able to have seafood anytime and anywhere I want while in Penang.

Dim Sum @ Gurney Drive

If you have eaten Dim Sum in Hong Kong or any overseas Chinatown that are operated by Hong Kong people, you would probably think that Malaysian Dim Sum is not as good in comparison. After all it is the signature dish of Hong Kong.

But there is one at Gurney Drive which I think is good enough if you have a craving for Dim Sum while you are at Penang. It is at the Corner Club Restaurant right in between the Evergreen Hotel and New Zealand Cafe. It is easy to find and parking here is a breeze as  there is a big open space car park right in front. You pay RM3 for parking but RM2 will be refunded if you dine inside the restaurant.

It is a proper restaurant with air-conditioned so you can escape from the tropical heat and relax here with good food.

Wantan Mee @ Gurney Plaza

I’m going to recommend a place that see Wantan Mee in a shopping mall which is located on the 7th Floor of Gurney Plaza. Max Gourmet (美食之家) specializes in Hong Kong cuisine with variety of noodles, pastries and dim sum. The Wantan noodle served here is a bit different from the usual Penang version as its recipe is actually prepared in Hong Kong style. Penang Wantan Mee uses Soy Sauce while the Hong Kong type utilizes oyster sauce. Its noodle also has a crunchy texture to it which I like most about this dish. Besides this dish, the Dim Sum here is also one of the better one in town as it is actually quite a challenge to find good one in Penang.

Other food you can get here includes prawn dumpling, Siew Mai (烧卖), egg tart and many more.

There is plenty of seating both inside and outside the outlet; thus there shouldn’t be any problem of getting a place. The best part of it is that it is located on the 7th Floor of Gurney Plaza which is also where you can find Golden Screen Cinema. For those that like to have a bite before your next favorite movie, this is the place to be!
