This has to be one of the best Bee Hoon Soup in Penang. Located at the end of Perak Lane (Lorong Perak) towards Jalan Jelutong, this small premise by the roadside only open in the evening. There are many places like this Penang where they only operate in the evening to capture more crowd after work. It is also the culture of people living in Malaysia and Singapore to come out in droves to hawker centres at night to avoid the hot tropical sun at day time.

More On Penang Food In Perth
When you are away from home, you will always have the craving for your hometown dishes. Fortunately there is quite a substantial number of northern Malaysian people migrated and living in Perth. Not sure whether it is related to the current political situation in Malaysia. But anyway some of them set up their own restaurant business and guess what, they do what they know best; offering their hometown cuisine to foreign customers.
This particular restaurants recently opened by a group of Langkawi people offering Malaysian and Penang dishes. I was delighted when I discovered that they have Penang Hokkien Mee and Fish Head Bee Hoon soup!

Today is the 6th of January 2013, we have lived passed 21st of December 2012. Perhaps the Mayans were simply ran out of paper on the 22nd December when trying to draft their calendar. Hor Chiu Hai Fish Head Bee Hoon Seafood Porridge
Burmah Road has been the major thoroughfare that connects Pulau Tikus all the way to the city center of George Town, Penang. Therefore it is by no surprise the whole stretch of Burmah Road has been haven for commercial activities. With the existence of trades comes people, with people comes food! It is also along here that many famous Penang hawker food can be found such as Hokkien Mee at Swee Kong Coffee Shop and Kek Seng Chicken Rice around Pulau Tikus area. Towards the city you have the New World Park Food Court and Hainanese Chicken Chop at Hai An just to name a few.
And if you prefer something less oily and healthier, then you definitely have to try the bee hoon soup at the junction of Burmah Road and Codrington Avenue. It is located right in front of a Chinese temple ( 大伯公廟 ). It only open for business in the evening.
You can mix and match the ingredients as you wish. They have fish head, fish fillet, pork liver, pork kidney, minced meat and much more. If a bowl of bee hoon soup is not enough for you, there is this stall right next to it selling Yong Tau Foo which is quite tasty.

Xiang Xia Bee Hoon Soup
Bee
Hoon (rice vermicelli) soup has always been the popular choice for health
conscious people as it is cooked rather than fried like majority of Penang
hawker food. I’ve written about the stall located along Penang road which
mainly uses pork and its organs as main ingredients. However, there is an
equally popular stall situated along Weld Quay right next to the tourist
attraction of Clan Jetties. It is called Xiang Xia 鄉下 (meaning
hometown in Mandarin). Unlike the Penang Road stall, the main ingredients here
are fish (either deep fried or cooked), fish head, squid, fish ball, prawn and
minced meat. You can either choose Bee Hoon or instant noodle to go with it.
The
dish is served boiling hot in a porcelain bowl that makes you sweat while
eating it. After eating a bowl of it, not only is your appetite satisfied, you
also feel much more energized as you also managed to burn some calories and
release toxin through your sweat. Although I’ve yet to find any scientific
proof to justify this; most people will feel that way after dining a bowl of
hot noodle soup compare to a plate of fried Char Koay Teow.
Although
it opens for both lunch and dinner, I suggest you go for dinner as it can be
very long wait during lunch time. There are more helpers and chefs at night.

Penang Road Bee Hoon Soup
There are quite a number of places scattered around Penang island that serve Bee Hoon soup. The two most common types served come with either fish or pork. My personal favorite is the one located at Ho Ping Coffee Shop; the intersection of Penang Road and Lorong Kampung Malabar.
The stall is located by the road side just in front of the coffee shop as shown at the bottom left of the picture above. They start operating from 5pm and this is the best time to go as you won't have to wait too long. If you go after 7, there will be too many people by then.
The ingredients are pork's kidney, liver, minced meat and even heart and brain! So far I still don't have the gut to try the extreme heart and brain. I always go for minced meat and kidneys. The soup is very rich in flavor, by far the best among the Bee Hoon soup in town. A big bowl will cost you RM8.50 while the small is RM7.00. The place closes on Thursday.
