Always call in to reserve before you go as this place is always packed even on weekdays. We missed the first session which is from 11.30am to 12.45pm but managed to booked the second session starting at 1pm.

Felt grateful that we got the window seat finally for the first time!

Going to Joyful Chef Restaurant again for the second time in a week! But this time we are having Hong Kong style Dim Sum which they are popular for.

Chicken + Prawn Dumpling, YUM! Not many places serve this type.

All time favourite - egg tart Hong Kong style.

My personal favourite, a must-order: Garlic Chive Prawn Dumpling.

Porridge.

All of the above with tea at A$32.60.

Dim Sum @ James Street

I'm now in Perth for more than one year and everything is better than Malaysia except food. Being a Penangite, food is an important part of me and I've been searching for good Malaysian food but unfortunately none is as good as what you can find at home.

As with other Australian cities, Perth embraces international communities coming from all over the world with very different cultures and not to mention their cuisines. Asians make up quite a substantial number in their population. This is a good thing because you then get to experience food from around the world.

If there is one Asian cuisine that I think is better than what you could find in Malaysia is definitely the Dim Sum. I've tried various outlets in and around Perth. All of them serve better Dim Sum than back home. Recently, we discovered a place where you think has the best Dim Sum among all that we have tried. It is the Golden Century Seafood Chinese Restaurant at 1/191 James Street, Northbridge.

The joy of eating Dim Sum is the push carts or trolleys that the waiters bring out and move all around the restaurant. It is like food on parade and we the spectators just sit around and wait for our favourite to arrive. It is definitely a different experience with other cuisine in that you are always waiting for the waiters to surprise you with some fantastic food. The busy and often noisy ambience make you feel like you are not in Australia but in Asia. It is a good place to catch up with friends, eat some good food while sipping Chinese tea or Yum Cha as the Cantonese would call it.

Century Egg Porridge - A must order dish whenever we go for Dim Sum because this is the only food that our 3 year old daughter could eat.

Deep Fried Prawn Dumpling - Not as oily and hard compared to others I have tried which make it very delicious while still managed to retain the juiciness of the prawn meat within.

Beside porridge, egg tart is another Dim Sum dish we would order for our daughter and she loves it!

Fish ball is very common in Malaysian Dim Sum but not so in Perth. Most Dim Sum restaurants don't serve them but the Golden Century does which will surely attract me to their front door more often in the future.

Most dumplings have prawn meat inside and you certain do not wish to order 5 different dumplings with the same common ingredients inside. If you are scratching your head to decide which one to go, I suggest you go for scallop dumpling instead of the usual prawn dumpling.

Soft shell crab - a very uncommon dish for Dim Sum but very delicious, crunchy and juicy at the same time.

Dim Sum @ Victoria Park

As mentioned in the previous post, Victoria Park has many Asian restaurants dotted along the busy Albany Highway due to its proximity to both Perth city center and Curtin University. And it offers an alternative place for people craving for Dim Sum without having to caught up in traffic jam and struggling to find a parking spot in the overcrowded Northbridge or Chinatown.

You can have equally delicious Dim Sum in Emma's Seafood & Dim Sum Restaurant at Victoria Park. The ambiance of the restaurant’s interior is a fusion of East meets West. This place is popular for their lunch or dinner dim sum. As with all other Dim Sum restaurants, waitresses will push their carts around and you just pick whichever dishes that look appealing to you.

Among the delicious Dim Sum includes: scallop dumpling, egg tart, bbq pork buns, rice flour rolls and deep fried squid tentacles.

Address: 886, Albany Highway, Victoria Park, WA, 6100, Australia.

Imperial Court Dim Sum

Parking is always a major hassle if you plan to go to Northbridge (Chinatown) to have Dim Sum (点心) as there is simply too much traffic and not enough car parks. You may end up parking your vehicle far away and having to walk quite a distance before you could sit down, relax and have a nice morning tea with your family.

Fortunately there is a place outside Chinatown but still close to the city where you can find good Dim Sum. Imperial Court is located at Como next to South Perth alongside the Kwinana Freeway. The address is 125 Melville Parade, Como and there is plenty of free parking space along this street. It faces the majestic Swan River and by the look of this magnificent view will sure opens up your appetite.

This place open at 11am but people would start queuing for a seat as early as 10.30am! Yes, this is how popular this restaurant is. One important thing to keep in mind is that if you are meeting someone, make sure that they are there on time and queue up together with you because if they are not there you will end up waiting in front of the reception counter and won't get a seat even if you were the first one in the queue.

This restaurant's special: Brown Rice Flour Roll
Xiaolongbao (小笼包) / Steamed Bun
Century Egg Porridge. It comes in middle size bowl enough for two.
Chicken Feet
Egg Tart (蛋挞) is quite nice but a bit sweet for me. It could be just me as other people seems to like it a lot.
Deep Fried Prawn Dumpling (炸虾饺) is very good because it is less oily, the prawns are fresh and the dumpling skin is not too thick but very crispy.
烧卖,this classic dish is juicy and fresh.
Steamed Prawn Dumpling (虾饺), the skin is so smooth it feels good in your mouth.
The long queue before the restaurant open for business.

 Opens everyday except Tuesday.
