Annathai Again

I've written about this place called Annathai-Kitchen back in 2012 and found myself revisiting it again this year for two reasons: it is located close to where I live and the food is simply delicious! It is fantastic to know that you don't have to go to Thailand to taste authentic Thai food (especially with the political unrest over there now). 

Penang is mostly famous for its local hawker food but there is a substantial Thai community here and that's why you can find many Thai restaurants scattered all over the island and mainland. In fact I just did a quick Google search and that someone has actually documented about 21 must visit Thai restaurants in Penang!

So what did I have the second time I been to Annathai, well mostly similar dishes because they are simply irresistible although I did try something new.

Finally, after all the hot food, how about some 'Fire Fighter' as they nicknamed it - Num Daeng (Red) - RM2.50

Black Canyon @ Gurney Plaza

Gurney Plaza is undoubtedly Penangites’ favourite hangout place as it is a place where you could spend the whole day with your family to do your shopping, eating, self-maintenances (such as slimming treatment, hair-cut and manicure) and watching the latest movies from Hong Kong or Hollywood. If you simply wish to get something to eat, there are plenty of varieties to choose from.

Most may think that eating in a shopping mall will cost more damage to their purse which is true when you compare to the ridiculously cheap and delicious food you could get from the streets. But there is one such outlet in Gurney Plaza that offer something more affordable if you do not wish to get away from the mall and go somewhere else to eat.

It is the Black Canyon restaurant right next to DOME. Their set individual meals are really affordable at just RM12.90 with a main dish plus a spicy mini Tom Yum. And just like any other cafés around the area, you can access their free wifi which you certainly could not get if you eat other hawker food along the street. I managed to download an App while dining there even though the speed was quite slow.

Can you take hot and sour food? This is the question posed to us by this restaurant's owner when we were about to order. If you are a first timer to this place, don't worry if you don't understand the food name in Thai or you can't read images on the menu well as the boss himself will make recommendation to you. For the first time I think it is OK to let him recommend but if you go there the second time, I suggest you make the order yourself in order to control the amount written on the bill later on. The following images were the dishes recommended to us:

Our bill for the evening (4 adults + my little one playing with food) came down to RM103. Generally satisfied with the service, ambience and taste. If you like Thai food, you should try this place.
