Taka's Kitchen

To find affordable place to eat in Perth, one of the most expensive city in the world is indeed a challenge. The average price for a take away coffee in Perth is $3.89, the highest in the nation when one considers that even Sydney, the biggest city in Australia has cheaper coffee to offer.

Therefor it is not surprising that one particular restaurant performs very well because they offer below average price for their customer. It is the Taka's Kitchen at the corner of Barrack and Wellington Street. It is a Japanese restaurants that cater to the lower end market in the city. Students and office workers make a beeline to this place during lunch time thanks to its affordable price.

Food wise it is OK but nothing to shout about. The plus sign is that they offer free flow of green tea, another selling point as drinks are also not cheap in Perth. So if you are looking for cheap food to just pump up your energy for the day, then this is the place to visit.

Penang Food In Perth!

We've covered quite an extensive locations where you can find cheap and authentic local Penang food that most tourists are not aware of. Penang food has become a part of our lives that define our identity and culture. Hence the famous sentence that 'you can take a Penangite out of Penang but you can never take Penang out of a Penangite!' That's why we got all freaked out whenever we see restaurants serving Penang food overseas; especially when you are away for quite some time. The mere sight of it induces a sense of warmth and closeness in your heart.

This is exactly my true personal experience when I first came to Perth, Australia. There is this place called D' Nyonya Penang Restaurant that is operated by a Malaysian couple and they offer mainly Malaysian cuisine. I tried their Penang Chat Koay Teow and I strongly believe that this is the closest in terms of authentic taste that I can find in Perth. And the bonus part of it is that its portion is at least twice that of Penang!

Located along Albany Highway in Victoria Park which is famous for variety of international cuisine, D' Nyonya Penang is easily accessible with its closeness to the city and major universities in the vicinity.

Roast Pork Rice @ Sky Cafe

Unlike in Hong Kong or major Chinatowns around the world; it is not easy to find roast pork rice in Penang as it is originally a Cantonese dish while the majority of Penangites are Hokkien. However there is one such place in Penang where you can find roast pork and which I proudly say that its taste can rival that of Hong Kong. It is located at Sky Cafe along Chulia Street, the famous backpackers' street of George Town. It only does lunch and opens for business as early as 11.30am. If you go there after 1pm, chances are you might be disappointed as their roast pork may be sold out.

There is only one hawker stall at this cafe and that saves you a lot of trouble as to what to order. The must try items are roasted pork, char siu and roasted duck. As for the drinks, I recommend lemon juice wit sour plum (you order in Hokkien as lengmong sui)

This is the one place that I never fail to visit whenever I'm in town!
