Dragon-i 龙的传人 @ Gurney Plaza

Dragon-i restaurant in Gurney Plaza needs no further introduction as it is a popular place for whoever goes to this mall frequently. Located on the ground floor in the new wing, its main seating area is right in the middle of the wall with only low wall surrounding it. Another part of the restaurant with the open kitchen is right next to the main seating separated only by circulation space of the mall. Good place to experience Shanghainese cuisine in Penang. 龙的传人 literally means the descendants of the dragon as the Chinese believe that is what they are.Let's see what the dragon people has to offer:

Main entrance in the middle of the mall.
Main seating area right in the centre of the mall.
More seating area on the other side with the open kitchen, great for people to enjoy while the master chefs doing their work.
Signature dish: Hot Stone Steamed Rice 石锅- steamed rice with chicken, mushrooms & Chinese sausages. (RM16)
Signature dish: Shanghainese Steamed Meat Dumplings 上海小笼包 (RM10.30)
Signature dish: Szechuan "Dan Dan" La Mian in Hot and Sour Soup 四川担担面 (RM13)BEWARE: SPICY!

Miraku @ G-Hotel

If you love Sashimi then it is always worth your time and money to go for Japanese buffet instead of Ala-Carte. Miraku at G-Hotel is such restaurant that offers good quality food in a traditional Japanese settings.

The location of this restaurant cannot be anymore strategic as it is located right in the most happening place in Penang - Gurney Drive. Miraku is on the first floor of G-Hotel where Gurney Plaza is just a few steps away.

Lunch is split into 2 sessions (this shows how popular it is) and you have to call in to reserve for a table and time of your arrival.

Contact number: 604-229 8702

Note: Buffet lunch only on Saturday, Ala-Carte on other days of the week.

Eagerly waiting outside Miraku's entrance which opens for business at 12pm sharp.
Looking down at G-Hotel main reception lobby while waiting for Miraku's to open for business. G-Hotel has chic interior with minimalist and sleek design elements.
Assorted sashimi - let's the feast begins!
Grill fish head
Lunch is split into two session so you won't have the usual craziness and crowd in most buffet lunch.

Black Canyon @ Gurney Plaza

Gurney Plaza is undoubtedly Penangites’ favourite hangout place as it is a place where you could spend the whole day with your family to do your shopping, eating, self-maintenances (such as slimming treatment, hair-cut and manicure) and watching the latest movies from Hong Kong or Hollywood. If you simply wish to get something to eat, there are plenty of varieties to choose from.
Most may think that eating in a shopping mall will cost more damage to their purse which is true when you compare to the ridiculously cheap and delicious food you could get from the streets. But there is one such outlet in Gurney Plaza that offer something more affordable if you do not wish to get away from the mall and go somewhere else to eat.
It is the Black Canyon restaurant right next to DOME. Their set individual meals are really affordable at just RM12.90 with a main dish plus a spicy mini Tom Yum. And just like any other cafés around the area, you can access their free wifi which you certainly could not get if you eat other hawker food along the street. I managed to download an App while dining there even though the speed was quite slow.

Spicy Crispy Salmon Salad RM10.90
Spicy Mini Tom Yum - come with any Set Meals
Thai Style Fried Rice With Prawn - part of the Set Meals
Spicy Stir-Fried Noodle with Chicken & Hot Basil RM9.90
Thai rice noodle (Kha-Nom Jean) RM9.90

Rose Tea Of Winter Warmers

We can basically categorize people into 2 main groups; the tea and coffee group. Very seldom that you will crave for both, you either love one or the other. Personal preferences aside, there are tons of research and debate on which is a better drink in terms of its ‘kick’ effect as well as its health consequences.

Many believe tea is better health wise, but it is only the antioxidants found in green tea that has been tested to be effective in reactivating our white blood cell which in turn boosting our immune system. And there are people who believe that coffee will give them more energy to have a great start in the morning but research on people who drink decaf coffee produces the same result since it is our mind that associates coffee with the ability to give us a boost and not so much the effect from caffeine.

At the end of the day, no one can really tell you for certain which is better. To save us time and trouble, let’s just forget about all those scientific review and simply follow our heart as to which we I like best. I for one am a coffee person who must have at a cup per day. However, ever since I’ve tasted the tea at Winter Warmers; I no longer so sure that I’ll stick to coffee alone!

There are many Winter Warmers outlets in Penang such as at Queensbay Mall, Juru Autocity and Sunway Carnival. The one that I went to is at Gurney Plaza; located on the ground floor facing G Hotel. The interior is decorated with English countryside theme with lots of rose patterns on wallpaper, tea cups, teapots and table cloth. Yes it does feel a bit feminine but soothing at the same time. The settings provide a serene atmosphere for people to lay back and enjoy their English teas.

The only thing I ordered there is their Rose Tea. The rose infused tea smell so nice that its fragrance lingered on in my mind long after I left the place. It is this combination of smell and taste that makes this drink so special. I can never have enough of it every time I go there.

玫瑰花茶

Of course Rose Tea is my biased recommendation for Winter Warmers but there is actually a wide range of selection for you if you prefer others. They also have Herbal Tea, Hot Milk Tea and Iced Fruit Tea. The tea comes in fine loose leaves form in a pot.

If you seriously are not a tea person and will not try other thing besides coffee, they also have heaps of choices for you. They serve Midnight Kiss Iced Coffee, Milan Iced Coffee, Night Shadow Iced Coffee, Rose Iced Latte, Green Tea Coffee, Rose Coffee, Lavender Coffee, Chocolate Mint Coffee and the more common Espresso and Cappuccino. Food wise, they have sandwiches, scones, cakes, dessert and fresh fruits.

Wantan Mee @ Gurney Plaza

I’m going to recommend a place that see Wantan Mee in a shopping mall which is located on the 7th Floor of Gurney Plaza. Max Gourmet (美食之家) specializes in Hong Kong cuisine with variety of noodles, pastries and dim sum. The Wantan noodle served here is a bit different from the usual Penang version as its recipe is actually prepared in Hong Kong style. Penang Wantan Mee uses Soy Sauce while the Hong Kong type utilizes oyster sauce. Its noodle also has a crunchy texture to it which I like most about this dish. Besides this dish, the Dim Sum here is also one of the better one in town as it is actually quite a challenge to find good one in Penang.

Other food you can get here includes prawn dumpling, Siew Mai (烧卖), egg tart and many more.

There is plenty of seating both inside and outside the outlet; thus there shouldn’t be any problem of getting a place. The best part of it is that it is located on the 7th Floor of Gurney Plaza which is also where you can find Golden Screen Cinema. For those that like to have a bite before your next favorite movie, this is the place to be!

Koi @ Gurney Plaza

Koi Japanese Restaurant located on 2nd floor of Gurney Plaza New Wing (next to Sushi King) has a new set lunch menu which the availability time has been extended to 10pm everyday. I went there to try the Chicken Katsu Don for dinner. It is just a bowl of rice with deep fried chicken pieces placed on top. You have to order drinks separately and there is no side dish. Like most Japanese restaurant, the green tea can be refilled.

The environment of the place is definitely great as one of the entire wall is made up of glass window that provide fantastic view to the big Angsana tree and the neighbouring buildings.

My order arrived unexpectedly quick in about 5 minutes. I guess that they have pre-prepared the food and just heat it up. After a mouthful of the chicken and rice, my assumption was proved to be correct. The chicken doesn't taste that fresh and the rice was not warm enough. A bowl of this dish + hot green tea + other charges came down to RM12.45 which I don't think is worth it.
